Like mentioned above, the story of Krampus originated around the seventh century CE, and tells the story of a dark monster who visits naughty children on Christmas Eve. He is believed to work with Santa Claus, with the jolly fat man visiting those who were good all year and rewards them with presents, while the monster visits those who have been naughty, warning them to be good next year. His appearance is usually that of a demonic goat, with black fur and terrifying fangs and hooves. He even is celebrated by some cultures, appearing right alongside Santa Claus when they are gearing up for Christmas.
The story of Krampus is so legendary that it has been brought to life in various forms of entertainment, such as video games, comic books, and a film that was released in 2015, which serves as the inspiration for our drink today. The 2015 film was written by Michael Dougherty, Todd Casey, and Zac Shields. The film is directed by Dougherty, and stars Emjay Anthony as Max Engel, Adam Scott as Tom Engel, Toni Collette as Sarah Engel, Stefanie LaVie Owen as Beth Engel, David Koechner as Howard, Maverick Flack as Howie Jr., and Allison Tolman as Linda.
The film follows the Engel family, who is gearing up for the Christmas season. However, the family is not jolly to be together, as it is full of bickering and hateful energy. Because of this, the youngest son, Max, turns his back on the Christmas spirit and wants nothing to do with the holiday. Because of the lack of the festive spirit at the house, it unleashes the wrath of Krampus, who is an ancient evil that is hell-bent on punishing those who are non-believers. All hell breaks loose as the family now must band together to fight for survival from this ancient, evil monster.
When released, the movie grossed $61.5 million, against a budget of $15 million, resulting in a box office success. Audiences enjoyed this little Christmas horror films, and there were mixed reviews from the critics. Many have cited it to be a gory good time, but it is no where close to being a groundbreaking, spectacular horror film. This movie stands out along the crowd for Christmas films as it is one of the few to be settled into the horror genre.
Because this movie proved that the Christmas genre can be terrifying, it is only right to include it among the Christmas cocktails this season!
