"The Year Without a Santa Claus" is a 1974 animated/stop-motion TV film that was written by William Keenan, based on the Phyllis McGinley 1956 book. Directed by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr., the TV special stars Mickey Rooney as Père Noël, Shirley Booth as Mrs. Santa, Colin Duffy as Ignatius Thistlewhite, Rhoda Mann as Mother Nature, George S. Irving as Heat Miser, Dick Shawn as Snow Miser, Bob McFadden as Jingle Bells, Bradley Bolke as Jangle Bells, Ron Marshall as Mr. Thistlewhite, and Christine Winter as Blue Christmas Girl.
The film revolves around the preparations for Christmas, with Santa Claus ready to bring toys to all of the nice boys and girls around the world. However, when a cold forces Santa to stay bed-ridden, he is afraid Christmas is ruined that year for all of the little children. However, two of his elves, Jingle and Jangle, decide to take matters into their own hands, and with Vixen's help, try to make Santa feel better to bring Christmas cheer all around the world. In order to recruit some children to help them with their mission, the two elves must first get past Heat Miser and Snow Miser before they arrive in Southtown, USA, where it never snows for Christmas. However, the two Misers make it hard for everyone, forcing their mother, Mother Nature, to get involved.
The special first premiered on ABC, and has since been played all over television in the years after. It is one of the classic Christmas films that is aired by numerous channels, reaching new audiences both young and old every year. Alongside films like "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty the Snowman", it has become one of the classics parents show their kids during the holiday season. Due to its success and its beloved nature by audiences and critics, it has spawned not only a live-action remake, but also a sequel that brings many of the original actors almost forty years later.
The Heat Miser and Snow Miser are some of the most iconic Christmas characters, alongside those like Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. From sticker decals to Funko Pops, they have stood the test of time and are still watched year after year on television and streaming during the holiday seasons!
