Day 28: "The Bloody Lawnmower" (Inspired by "Sinister")

By: The Film Bartender

For the past two years, the "Science of Scare" project from Broadband Choices has released the results of their study on what is the scariest horror film of all time. They bring in a group of subjects, and track their vitals to see which movie provokes the highest amount of scares in the audience. Since the creation of this scientific study, one movie has remained in the number 1 spot - Scott Derrickson's 2012 film, "Sinister", which is the inspiration for today's drink! Throughout the film's numerous jumpscares, there is one that stands out above the rest - the lawnmower jumpscare. Keep reading below to find out what this film is, and the ingredients and directions to make your very own Bloody Lawnmower!

"Sinister" is a 2012 film that was written by C. Robert Cargill and Scott Derrickson, with Derrickson in the director's chair. The film starred Ethan Hawke, James Ransone, Nicholas King, Juliet Rylance, Clare Foley, Michael Hall D'Addario, and Victoria Leigh. The movie opens on a family with sacks over their heads and rope draped over their necks. They are then hung by the tree branch when a floating axe cuts the tree limb, killing the entire family.

This is the reason that true crime writer Ellison Oswald moves into the very same house, hoping to document the murder of that family. When he starts to write his book, he starts to experience very eerie and unsettling things around him, which is also accompanied by a box of home videos with fun titles like "Sleepy Time '98" and "Pool Party '66". What he then discovers is that these are no normal ordinary home videos, but rather graphic murders of families in the same house, one after the other.

One thing Ellison notices, however, is that a demonic figure is present throughout every home video, which he comes to learn is referred to as "Mr. Boogie". When his family is starting to become affected by the demonic presences behind him, Ellison must make a decision - maintain his status as a hit writer and finish his book or do what is best for his family and leave the house for good.

When the film was released, it was a major box office success, grossing over $87 million worldwide against a $3 million budget. It also received massive critical acclaim and positive reactions from audiences, citing its use of unexpected jumpscares to achieve the terrifying nature of the movie. Even though it featured numerous other horror cliches, it was able to use every single one to its advantage to terrify every single audience member. The film received a sequel in 2015, but the sequel was panned by audiences and critics for its mediocre jump scares and story, while also simply not being as scary as the one that came before it.

If you have seen the movie, I'm sure you are familiar with the iconic and terrifying lawnmower scene, which shows a lawnmower mowing the lawn in almost pitch darkness, accompanied only by the light of the camera. It seems normal for the most part, until a body suddenly appears in front of the lawnmower's tracks, brutally murdering the poor person and scarring every audience member in the theater for this movie. Not only is it one of the most successful jump scares in horror history, but is possibly the best in the entire film. Our cocktail today is inspired by the lawnmower, with a bloody twist at the end. Keep scrolling to find the full list of ingredients and directions for this terrifyingly tasty beverage.

Ingredients:

- 1 oz Tequila

- 1 1/2 oz Green Apple Pucker Liqueur

- 1/2 oz Lime Juice

- Sprite (to top)

- Splash of Grenadine

- Ice

Directions:

1. In a cocktail shaker, add ice, Tequila, Green Apple Pucker, and Lime Juice. Shake vigorously until well combined.

2. Strain into a stemless wine flute, and fill the glass with a chilled Sprite. Add in a splash of Grenadine, and let it sink to the bottom. DO NOT STIR. Serve.

Film Fact: The family that was hanged on the tree in the beginning of the film were all played by stuntmen. However, when the scene was first shot, the stunt coordinator botched the preparations for this scene, resulting in the actors legitimately being hung and choked. Fortunately, they all survived, and the stunt coordinator was fired soon after.

You have now made your very own cocktail inspired by the scariest film of all time, "Sinister"! Let me know in the comments below what you think of this movie and cocktail! This is Day 28 of my Bring Out the Boos 2022 Halloween series, and there are only three days left for this event!
