Slasher films are perhaps one of the biggest subgenres in the horror genre, and is definitely a fan favorite around the world. However, the slasher movies would not be what they are without their iconic villains, which audiences love more than the actual protagonists of the film. Among some of the most famous slasher villains, which include Ghostface, Michael Myers, and Jason Voorhees, is Freddy Krueger from the famous "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series, terrifying audiences to make them want to stay awake so Freddy won't haunt their dreams. Today is Day 27 of my Bring Out the Boos 2022 series, and our drink for today is split into three different parts that I call "Freddy's Brew". Not only do these taste devilishly good, but they'll help keep you awake so Freddy won't get you in your dreams!
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" is a 1984 horror film that was written and directed by Wes Craven, and stars Heather Langenkamp, Johnny Depp (in his debut role), Jackie Earle Haley, John Saxon, Amanda Wyss, Jsu Garcia, Ronee Blakely, and Robert Englund as the terrifying Freddy Krueger. The film focuses on Nancy Thompson, who is a teenager that has great grade and great friends. They are all very close, and do almost everything together. However, when her friends are mysteriously slaughtered in their sleep, she starts to investigate what is going on with the teenagers in her town.
That is when she comes face-to-face with Freddy Krueger, a deformed and terrifying man that has sharp knives for his fingers on his right hand. He goes into innocent children's' dreams and brutally murder them when they are at their most vulnerable. For it to stop in her town, Nancy realizes she must put a stop to this terrifying man, causing her to have to face him and end him for good. Even though Nancy does put a stop to this villain, it proves that he will always be there by the terrifying and shocking ending that no one saw coming. I won't put here what it is, but it is similar to the ending of the first "Friday the 13th" film, which also contains a fantastic ending.
When the film was released, it received rave reviews from both critics and audiences, with it still being considered one of the best horror films of all time. It grossed around $57 million worldwide, and is credited for giving the "Friday the 13th" franchise a run for their money. Because of its critical and financial success, it spawned six sequels: "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge", "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors", "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master", "A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child", and "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare".
The sequels weren't as positively received as the first film, with many critics and fans saying it leaned too far into the campy quality of a slasher film. Even though it was dismissed at their releases, it still brought in tons of money in the box office and garnered a cult following in the years to come. After the six sequels, Craven tried to reboot the franchise with "Wes Craven's New Nightmare", which brought Freddy to the real world. Most of the actors from the original return playing themselves, and Freddy is haunting Englund and the other actors who brought him to life. It garnered a massive box office, and received great reviews from the critics and audience.
Due to the newfound success of "New Nightmare", the next time audiences saw Freddy was in "Freddy vs. Jason", which pitted the two horror icons against each other in a massive showdown. While it received mixed reviews from critics, it is the most successful of both franchises, grossing over $116 million worldwide. It marks Englund's last appearance as Freddy, as the studio behind the films decided to reboot the entire franchise, releasing 2010's "A Nightmare on Elm Street", which is a remake of the first film from Craven. It received horrible reviews from critics and fans, but became the highest grossing film in the series.
Our drinks today are inspired by the drink Nancy drinks to stay awake during Freddy's murders - coffee. Our main cocktail today is Freddy's Brew, which is an alcoholic spin on the classic cup of joe. Alongside that, we have two shots, which represent the colors of Freddy's dirty and mangled shirt he is known for wearing.
