Day 26: "The Woodsboro Killer" (Inspired by "Scream"

By: The Film Bartender

Ghostface from Wes Craven's "Scream" franchise is one of the most well-known slasher villains of all time, with thousands of kids and adults dressing up as the famous killer for Halloween every year. He is definitely one of the most fun serial killers in the slasher genre, and has been parodied many times throughout the past twenty years. Today's cocktail for this year's "Bring Out the Boos" series is "The Woodsboro Slasher", inspired by the iconic villain! Keep reading to find out more about this classic horror movie and for the recipe of this bloody good cocktail that will add a lot of spookiness and fun to your next Halloween party!

"Scream" is a 1996 Slasher film that was written by Kevin Williamson and directed by the iconic Wes Craven. The movie stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, Drew Barrymore, Matthew Lillard, and Roger Jackson as the terrifyingly iconic phone voice. The movie follows a group of teenagers in Woodsboro, California who are just trying to make it through high school and their daily lives, especially Sidney Prescott, whose mother was mysteriously murdered. However, there have been teenage murders all throughout the town by a masked assailant that has yet to be caught.

When the mysterious murderer takes a sudden interest to Sidney and her friends, she must figure out how to survive the killer's deadly game, while also wanting to catch the killer himself. What pursues is a deadly game of cat and mouse that brings in both the help (and the aggravation) of local deputy Dewey and news reporter Gale Weathers, with the latter trying to break the story of her career. What they least expect is that the killer is actually under their noses all along, and has a deep personal connection to Sidney and her friends.

When released, the film received numerous positive reviews, with critics adoring the fact that the characters are self-aware and turn the movie into a meta comedy of sorts. It allows the actors to have a lot more fun with this film and show how it is sort of parodying the slasher genre, while also delivering a fascinating and frightening horror movie. Many fans and critics have cited this film for revitalizing the slasher genre, and in turn, spawned multiple sequels for this franchise.

The movie garnered three sequels directed by Craven, each receiving positive praise and great box office turnouts. Craven expressed desire to make a fifth and sixth film, but unfortunately passed away before he was able to complete them. Instead, the fifth film was helmed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and featured new characters in the franchise that were joined by the actors from the previous films. It also received very positive praise from critics, and a sixth film was greenlit by the studios, which will be released in March of 2023.

The first film also had a major impact on parody culture, with the iconic "Scary Movie" parodying the entirety of the "Scream" film. Even though it parodied numerous other horror movies, Ghostface was the major player in the entire movie and had many of the references come straight from the "Scream" franchise. This not only found its own cult audience, but made audiences fall in love with the original franchise in turn.

Today's cocktail is inspired by the killer from these movies, with a blood red base and a white floating top. It perfectly captures who the Ghostface killer is, and will add some fun and spookiness to your next Halloween party or "Scream" marathon. Film Fact: The party scene near the end of "Scream" runs forty-two minutes long, and was shot over the course of twenty-one days from the time sun set to the time it rose. After it wrapped, the crew had t-shirts made that read "I SURVIVED SCENE 118" (which was the name of the scene during shooting). The cast and crew jokingly called it "the longest night in horror history."
