Day 24: "Frankenstein's Monster"Cocktail

By: The Film Bartender

Frankenstein's monster, made famous by Boris Karloff's portrayal of the literary classic character, is one of the most famous and terrifying monsters in the classic Universal Monster series. From his green complexion to his towering height, he terrorized the town (even if not on purpose) where Dr. Henry Frankenstein made him, turning him into a criminal that needs to be killed. There have been many movie adaptations and many spoofs on this infamous monster, which elevates him to the status of other horror icons like Dracula and The Mummy. Our drink today, aptly named "Frankenstein's Monster" is perfectly able to achieve that green coloring, with a small kick at the end to add some spookiness to your next Halloween Party or your next rewatch of these classic films.

After the success of 1931's "Dracula", Universal Pictures decided to pursue more films in the monster category, looking to bring these classic literary characters to life to terrify audiences. This led to the release of their second Classic Monster film, "Frankenstein", released in the same year as the famous vampire movie. It was directed by James Whale, and starred Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, Dwight Frye, Edward Van Sloan, Marilyn Harris, and Boris Karloff as the infamous giant green monster created by the mad scientist.

The film follows Henry Frankenstein, who is a famous and respected scientist who goes mad, and decides he wants to play the role of God. Along with his trusty, hunchback sidekick, Fritz, he goes around the town and robs graves of different body parts and steals a brain from the science classroom at the local university. His goal is to bring a man back from the dead, fashioning him in his own creation to show that reanimation is entirely possible in the real world.

What he creates is a giant behemoth of a man, who is green in skin color and doesn't understand English. Because of this, the town is frightened of this beast, even though the Monster only wants friends and someone to love him. Because of this, he does things like accidentally drowning a girl and destroying structures around town to find where he belongs.

Not only does this serve as a fantastic monster film by Universal, but a story of acceptance and how people quickly judge a book by its cover. It's really heartbreaking and hard to watch, as the Monster is a victim of his circumstance and doesn't know what is really happening to him. It serves as a lesson in humanity, while also bringing to life the characters and plot from Mary Shelley's classic novel. The lesson, and even in the film and the characters, are still popular and relate to many different aspects of today's life.

The Whale-led film did extremely well, and spawned a sequel that picks up directly after the events of this first movie, titled "The Bride of Frankenstein". It introduces a mate to the famous Monster, and the film as a whole, in my opinion, is much better than the one that preceded it. Because of how famous and successful the first movie was, it spawned some of the greatest monster movies of all time, both serious and comedic.

Our drink today is directly inspired by the classic monster, taking a tall and green approach to mixology. We have a tall Green drink that also features some fruity taste thanks to the blood red grenadine. Keep scrolling down below to see the full recipe for "Frankenstein's Monster"!

Ingredients:

- 1 1/2 oz Tequila

- 2 oz Sour Apple Pucker Liqueur

- Sprite (to top)

- Ice

- Sugar (for rim)

- Lemon slice (for rim)

- Pepper (for rim)

- 1/2 oz Grenadine (for syringe)

Directions:

1. On a stemless Champagne flute, rub the rim with the lemon slice, and dip in a pepper and sugar mixture on a plate. Set aside.

2. In a cocktail shaker, add ice to the bottom. Then add the Tequila and the Sour Apple Pucker Liqueur. Shake vigorously until well combined.

3. Strain it into the previously prepared champagne flute, and then top the beverage with Sprite.

4. In. syringe, fill it up with the Grenadine, and then dunk the syringe into the top of the drink, plunging it halfway.

5. Serve.

Film Fact: During the production of 1931's "Frankenstein", there was some concern that seven-year-old Marilyn Harris, who played Maria, the little girl that is thrown into the lake by the Monster, would be overly frightened by Boris Karloff in costume and make-up when it comes time to filming. When the cast was assembled to drive over to location, Harris ran from her car directly to Karloff, who was already in full make-up and costume, took his hand, and asked "May I drive with you?" Delighted, and in typical Karloff fashion, he responded, "Would you, darling?" She then rode to location with "The Monster".
