Day 23: "Prom Queen" Cocktail (Inspired by "Carrie")

By: The Film Bartender

One of the most famous horror shots ever was Carrie covered in pig's blood after winning prom queen. It is perhaps also the best moment in the movie as well, as she attacks the bullies and the rest of the student body after the humiliating stunt that her classmates pulled on her. It is both horrifying and reliving to watch, knowing the true antagonists of this movie finally got what they deserved. This serves as the inspiration for our drink today, which is titled "Prom Queen" due to the beautiful white shade on top, and the devilishly blood red shade on the bottom. Keep reading to find the full recipe of this tasty beverage that will add some spookiness to your next Halloween Party!

Stephen King is established as one of the best horror authors of all time, if not the best there ever is. He has been thrilling and terrifying audiences with novels like "The Shining" and "Salem's Lot". In 1974, he released his first novel, titled "Carrie", which follows the titular character who is gifted with special abilities. However, her devoutly religious mother believes her abilities are a gift from Satan, punishing her and making her feel horrible for what she was born with.

The other girls at school don't make things much better for Carrie. They constantly bully her and make fun of her, especially when Carrie experiences her first Period, which her mother never told her about. Because of this, she is usually seen as the shy outcast that no one really hangs out with. However, the popular girls at school decide to devise a plan to absolutely ruin Carrie and her reputation forever. They decide to all vote her Prom Queen, and when Carrie takes the stage to give her acceptance speech, she is dowsed in pig's blood, ruining her dress and her night. She finally decides to take revenge for the actions caused by her peers, killing the bullies and her classmates while also destroying the prom. She then starts to wreck havoc on the town and everyone she knows, causing for a state of emergency around the town.

The novel was positively received, and a film was ordered for this classic horror story. In 1976, Brian De Palma was tasked with adapting this novel, with Sissy Spacek in the titular role. The film also starred John Travolta, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, William Kat, P.J. Soles, and Betty Buckley. The film adaptation was very positively received by both critics and audience members alike, and even now, some praise it as one of the best Stephen King adaptations. It has developed a massive cult following, and many scenes and imagery from it is engrained in horror film history.

In 2013, Kimberly Pierce wanted to try to capture the horror of the novel and the original film in her updated and modern version of the classic tale. The film starred Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Gabriella Wilde, Ansel Elgort, Portia Doubleday, Alex Russell, Katie Strain, and Jefferson Brown. The film followed the same plot beats and story as the novel and original film, but received many mixed reviews from critics and fans of the classic book and film. This movie adaptation isn't as celebrated or as well remembered as the original, but it is no where near as bad as some remakes are nowadays.

This drink perfectly sums up the famous scene for the film, where Carrie has the pig's blood dumped over her on the stage. The top part of the drink represents the purity and kindness of Carrie, as well as her beautiful dress. The bottom of the drink represents not only the pig blood that is poured on her, but the evilness of the acts that are inflicted upon her. Check out the recipe for this cocktail down below!

Ingredients:

2 oz Pink Whitney

1/2 oz Lemon Juice

3/4 oz Simple Syrup

Club Soda (to top)

Splash of Grenadine

Directions:

1. Add ice to a cocktail shaker, and then add in the Pink Whitney, the Lemon Juice, and the Simple Syrup. Shake vigorously until well combined, and then strain into a stemless champagne flute.

2. Top the drink with Club Soda to the top. Splash in the Grenadine and let it sink to the bottom.

3. Serve.

Film Fact: When Sissy Spacek was preparing for her role as Carrie, she isolated herself from the rest of the ensemble cast, decorating her room with heavy religious iconography and studied Gustave Doré's illustrated Bible. She studied "the body language of people being stoned for their sins", starting or ending every scene in one of those positions.
