Day 20: "Casper-tini" Cocktail (Inspired by "Casper")
By: The Film Bartender
Ghosts are usually terrifying and evil creatures, haunting manors or mansions and scaring out the residents who live there. However, what if there was a friendly ghost, one who juicy wants to be happy and make friends out of the humans he encounters. His name is Casper the Friendly Ghost, and he is perhaps one of the only happy and fun ghosts around. Our drink today, perfectly called a "Casper-tini" represents this fun ghoul with this playful kick that everyone will love.
Casper was created to star in a series of children's books by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo in 1915, until they sold the rights to this friendly ghost to Paramount Pictures. Once the sale was finalized, he was featured in his first NovelToon, called "The Friendly Ghost", where he was introduced to the world. After this NovelToon was very successful, he starred in two or three more NovelToons, making Casper famous for kids and families.
After the NovelToons proved a success, he started to star in Harvey Comics, which created the new modern design for Casper that he has had ever since. They made multiple cartoons starring the friendly ghost, and even produced three spinoffs to this series. From there, with his newfound fame, Casper became the subject of multiple cartoons, spanning from 1960 to present day. These cartoons document Casper and his adventures that he has with his human friends, as well as trying to avoid his mean and bullying relatives.
When Casper showed to be a major money-maker, Amblin and Universal Pictures decided to give the ghost the big-screen treatment in 1995. "Casper" was directed by Brad Silberling off a screenplay by Sherri Stoner and Deanna Oliver. The film starred Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, Devon Sawa, Malachi Pearson, Cathy Moriarti, Eric Idle, Amy Brenneman, Brad Garrett, and Ben Stein. The movie follows an afterlife therapist and his daughter, as they move into a crumbling mansion to remove the mean spirits that haunt it. However, they encounter Casper, who is the friendliest ghost they have ever met. Because of that, the daughter befriends the ghost, leading them on adventures with one another.
The 1995 film received mixed reviews and reactions from critics and audiences, but is still a beloved film by many fans. After the release of the 1995 film, it spawned many direct-to-DVD sequels, as well as spin-off cartoon series and films. It seems like Casper will be a major player during the Halloween season for the foreseeable future, delighting fans and families alike.
This drink is directly inspired by the friendly ghost, with a white color and a more complex texture than a simple drink. It's not as strong as others, showing his more friendly side, but will also give you a good time if you drink the whole thing during your rewatch of the 1995 film. Check down below for the full recipe for the "Casper-tini".
Ingredients
- 1 oz Bailey's
- 1 scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream
- 1 1/2 oz Vodka
- 1 oz Simple Syrup
- Soda Water (to top)
Directions:
1. In a mixer, add the Ice Cream and the Bailey's. Mix on high until the two are fully combined. Let the ice cream mixture sit so it will start to melt.
2. In a cocktail shaker, add the Vodka and Simple Syrup. Stir them together until well mixed. Pour into a martini glass.
3. Use Soda Water to top the glass, but leave room for the ice cream mixture.
4. Pour the ice cream mixture over the top of the drink, allowing it to sink and mix with the rest of the drink in the glass.
5. Serve.
Film Fact: In the mirror scene in "Casper" (1995), Dr. James Harvey was going to transform into Steven Spielberg. Spielberg filmed the cameo, but it was cut for pacing reasons. Spielberg was relieved, feeling he was a terrible actor.
