Bring Out the Boos 2022

Day 18: "Absolute Pleasure" Cocktail (Inspired by "The Rocky Horror Picture Show")

By: The Film Bartender

"Give yourself over to absolute pleasure" is the tagline of the cult classic Halloween film, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". It is perhaps the perfect tagline for a film like this, which is a sexualized version of the classic horror movies and tropes that came before it. This drink today, which is perfectly called "Absolute Pleasure" is the representation of the content and characters present in this film, which is a classic movie that must be rewatched every Halloween season.

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" came out in 1975, and was directed by Jim Sharman based off a screenplay by Sharman and Richard O'Brien. The movie stars Tim Curry, Richard O'Brien, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Meat Loaf, Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell, Peter Hinwood, Jonathan Adams, and Charles Gray. It is based off the London staged production, which ran for a couple years before it received the Hollywood film treatment.

The film is centered around Brad and Janet, two young adults that are head over heels in love with one another. They are very excited to start their lives as the clean-cut and perfect couple they are. However, one night, when they are driving on a windy road in the forest in the pouring rain, they get a flat tire, forcing them to leave their car and find sanctuary out of the rain. The only place remotely near them is a giant castle, which is referred to as the Frankenstein castle in a song in the film.

When they knock on the door, they find they are interrupting a Transylvanian party, full of crazy characters and a rollicking fun time. They find that they are in the humble abode of Dr. Frank N' Furter, a transvestite who is purely motivated by sexual desires. He is creating a creature that will fulfill his sexual desires, a more erotic and modern version of Frankenstein's monster. When Brad and Janet stay for the night, the castle and the cast of crazy characters are not what they seem, and they are found fighting for their lives and innocence before the night is over.

When the movie released in the middle of the 1970's, it was a massive box office failure, and was panned by both critics and audiences alike. This wasn't due to the film actually being bad, but it being way ahead of its time at the time of release. Since then, the movie started to gain traction and fame through midnight showings, and became an instant cult classic that is still widely popular in this day and age. There are still numerous midnight showings of the film in various theaters, where die-hard fans dress up like their favorite characters and re-enact the movie right along with it on the big screen. It is a fun Halloween event to attend during spooky season, and still serves as one of the best Halloween films ever made.

Our drink today is inspired by all of the classic characters, settings, and songs from this film. This champagne cocktail is pink in color, but packs a devilishly delicious kick at the end. It's perfect for any fan of this classic film, and will add a fun twist to your next Halloween party. Just try to resist the urge to do the Time Twist whenever sipping on this beverage!

Ingredients:

- 2 oz Pink Whitney

- 1 1/2 oz Cranberry Juice

- 1/2 oz Lemon Juice

- Prosecco (to top)

- Red Sprinkles (for rim)

Directions:

1. With a slice of lemon, rub the lemon along the rim of a champagne flute, and then dip in red sprinkles to create the rim. Set aside.

2. In a cocktail shaker, add the Pink Whitney, the Cranberry Juice, and the Lemon Juice. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds so it is well combined.

3. Strain the drink into the champagne flute, and top with Prosecco.

4. Serve.

Film Fact: According to interviews, Patricia Quinn only took a role in the movie because she loved the opening song, "Science Fiction - Double Feature". She was upset when she didn't get to sing the song in the movie, but agreed to lip-sync the words as a pair of red lips in the beginning, with the vocals being provided by Richard O'Brien.
