Day 16: "Morticia Addams" Cocktail (Inspired by "The Addams Family")

By: The Film Bartender

Morticia Addams is one of the most iconic female characters that represent the Halloween season. She's mysterious, seductive, sexy, and just a badass. She may come from a family of weirdos, but she's perhaps the only one who is fancy and beautiful in the entire Addams family. That is why Day 16's cocktail is based off the iconic female protagonist that has been a Halloween legend for many decades now.

The Addams Family was introduced to audiences in 1964 in the form of a Black & White television show. The show starred Carolyn Jones, John Astin, Ted Cassidy, Lisa Loring, Ken Weatherwax, Blossom Rock, and Felix Silla. The classic show ran for two seasons, and made Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, and Pugsley Addams household names. They represented the average American family with a much macabre twist, showing that this family is definitely far from normal.

However, the most famous telling of this classic family is their 1991 one, which is aptly named after them. It was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, and written by Caroline Thompson and Larry Wilson. It starred Anjelica Houston, Christina Ricci, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Jimmy Workman, and Carel Struycken. It brought all of the major hijinks of the family to the big screen, and modernized them for the time it was released. It was positively received by critics and fans, and has since become a major cult classic with a massive following in the years after. Because of the success of the first film, it prompted them to release a sequel in 1993, called "Addams Family Values". This movie introduced a brand new character to the family, an infant named Pubert. This upsets the two children, and they try to find ways to eliminate the newborn. This film was also very positively received, and many fans have preferred this one over the original.

The Addams Family since have become classic characters for the spooky season in October, and Universal wanted to capitalize on the success with a family-friendly animated film. Directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, the movie starred Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Finn Wolfhard, Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Bette Midler, Allison Janney, and Martin Short. Universal was hoping this star-studded adventure would put newfound interest into these characters, but the film unfortunately fell short, being panned by critics and fans alike. However, that didn't stop Universal from releasing a sequel to this animated film, which followed the family on a roadtrip to grow closer together. This film was more poorly received than the one that came before it, and many have cited that Universal is ruining these characters. We shall see if they want to pursue a third film in this animated series, even though it may be detrimental to them and the franchise.

Morticia, who is the beautiful wife of Gomez and the mother of Wednesday and Pugsley, is perhaps the most famous and iconic female character for the Halloween season. She attracts the same sex appeal as Elvira does, and many females dress up like this iconic Halloween queen for the holiday every year. This drink is classy, strong, and as elegant as the beautiful woman it is inspired by.

Ingredients:

- 2 oz White Rum

- 1 1/2 oz Cranberry Juice

- 3/4 oz Blue Curaçao

- 1/2 oz Grenadine

- 1/4 oz Lime Juice

- Purple Sprinkles (for rim)

- Ice

-Lime

Directions:

1. With a lime, rub the rim of a margarita glass, and then spin the glass on a plate of purple sprinkles to create the rim. Set aside.

2. In a cocktail shaker, add all of the ingredients. Add in multiple ice cubes, and shake vigorously until well combined.

3. Strain the cocktail into the prepared margarita glass.

4. Serve.

Film Fact: After "The Addams Family" (1991) premiered, children would frequently recognize Raul Julia as Gomez Addams out in public, which according to him, always brought a smile to his face. Julia stated that Gomez was by far his favorite role, and his family said that this recognition as especially meaningful to him in the final months of his life because he loved performing for children and making them happy whenever the opportunity presented itself.

Now you have made your very own cocktail inspired by the magnificent Morticia Addams. Not only is this drink elegant and beautiful like the iconic woman, but it also has a sharp kick in it that will show how strong this character is. This will definitely add some spice to your next rewatch of the classic films, and will add some spooky elegance to your next Halloween Party!
