Day 15: "Shaun's Punch" (Inspired by "Shaun of the Dead")

Zombie flicks are a huge part of the horror genre. From movies and TV shows like "Night of the Living Dead" to "The Walking Dead",  zombies are a crucial part of the monster genre in entertainment, as well as the Halloween tradition all together. In 2004, director Edgar Wright made his motion picture debut with "Shaun of the Dead", a horror comedy about what would happen in London during the zombie apocalypse. This drink is inspired by the blood and beer present in the movie, two liquids that are both digested quite a bit throughout the movie.

The movie was released in 2004, and stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Kate Ashfield, Lucy Davis, Peter Serafinowicz, Bill Nighy, Dylan Moran, Jessica Hynes, and Rafe Spall. The plot revolves around a couple of flatmates named Shaun and Ed, who are both very immature for their age. They have a hard time keeping jobs ad relationships, and both of them usually end up back in their apartment playing video games together.

However, when the zombie apocalypse starts, they must figure out how to survive. With the help of Shaun's ex-girlfriend, their friends, and Shaun's parents, they must find a way to get to a safe haven for themselves, where they'll be free of the undead who want to consume their brains. Wright blends the two genres of horror and comedy together to deliver a deliciously fun adventure film that everyone can enjoy together this Halloween.

This is the first collaboration between Wright, Pegg, and Frost, who came together to make two more films, "Hot Fuzz" and "The World's End". Those two films, with "Shaun of the Dead", come together to make an unofficial trilogy called "Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy", which is named after an inside joke about the popular ice cream brand. All three movies are beloved by fans, and have done incredibly well in the box office, which kickstarted Wright's career as a writer and director.

This drink is a beer cocktail, as the characters in this movie consume beer on a regular basis, and the final act takes place in a pub. In fact, the first scene shows how beer and Ed has ruined his relationships with ex-girlfriends and other people. However, blood is also consumed by the zombies throughout the film, perhaps more than beer or alcohol. By combining these two factors together, we get a delicious beer cocktail that will serve as a great beverage during your next rewatch and at this year's Halloween Party.

Ingredients:

- 1 oz Lime Juice

- 1 oz Vodka

-1 oz White Rum

- 1 1/2 oz Grenadine

- 1/2 bottle Beer

- Ice

- Lime Wheel (for garnish)

Directions:

1. Pour all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker, and stir them all together with a bar spoon.

2. Fill a highball glass halfway with ice cubes, and slowly pour the mixture into the glass.

3. Garnish with a lime wheel. Serve.

Film Fact: George A. Romero, creator of the movies that this film pays homage to, was so impressed with Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's work that he asked them to cameo in his film, "Land of the Dead", as zombies.

Now you have made your very own bloody beer concoction to celebrate this classic horror comedy film.  This drink will be a hit at your next Halloween Party, and will guarantee a fun and hilarious time watching this with your friend group this Halloween!

This is Day 15 of my Bring Out the Boos 2022 Halloween Event, where I make a drink every day for the month of October to celebrate this spooky holiday! We are halfway through this year's Halloween event, and there are still more drinks to come! My previous drinks are posted on the blog, where I have done drinks based off of "Dracula" and "Friday the 13th". Check back everyday to find the next recipe for the new drink that will serve as Day 16's cocktail! Until then, Happy Drinking!
