Day 14: "Haddonfield's Halloween" (Inspired by "Halloween")
By: The Film Bartender
On Halloween night in 1978, Michael Myers returned to his hometown of Haddonfield, and unleashed horror on the town for the spooky night. Killing babysitters throughout his tenure in the town, he became legend around the town and people feared the coming of Michael Myers every halloween after. This is the plot for John Carpenter's 1978 film, "Halloween", which is the slasher film that inspired every other slasher that came after it. Myers and Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode have become icons in the horror genre, and there's no better way to celebrate the release of the highly-anticipated "Halloween Ends" than a drink inspired by the classic horror franchise.
This classic 1978 film was directed by Carpenter, which he co-wrote with Debra Hill. The film stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Nancy Kyes, Donald Pleasance, Kyle Richards, Tony Moran, P.J. Soles, Brian Andrews, Sandy Johnson, and Nick Castle as the famous killer. Like mentioned above, Michael returns to kill the babysitters around Haddonfield on Halloween night, after brutally murdering his sister fifteen years prior. This establishes Curtis as one of the first Final Girls, who are the female heroines that survive the brutal attacks by these killers in slasher films.
The first film was positively received by both fans and critics, and earned a lot at the box office. Because of that, the film warranted multiple sequels, each following Michael killing innocent people around him (with the exclusion of Halloween III: Season of the Witch", which Michael did not make an appearance in). However, none of the sequels got anywhere close to the success or the status as the first one, and many were box office and critical failures. They added in plot lines of Laurie being Michael's baby sister, Michael having a niece who has supernatural powers, etc. Unfortunately, this led the franchise into the genre of parody, making Michael less scary and more cheesy.
Fans of the franchise thought the movie series was done for good, with there seemingly no way to come back with a new and improved story to continue the legend of Michael Myers. Yet, in 2018, David Gordon Green released "Halloween", a reboot/sequel that comes right after the first film, ignoring all of the other sequels years past. Curtis comes back to play the role that kickstarted her career, preparing herself for the return of the Boogeyman to bring him down for good. The film was positively received by both critics and fans, and some considered this the rejuvenation the franchise needed to continue. After the success of the reboot, Universal ordered two sequels to the 2018 film, titled "Halloween Kills" and "Halloween Ends". The second film in this new trilogy received mixed reviews from both critics and fans, and Universal has been promoting the finale to this epic saga for over a year, with it being released in theaters and on Peacock on October 14 of this year.
The opening sequences for the "Halloween" films are iconic, with a pumpkin glowing brightly as the credits flash on the screen. That is the inspiration for today's drink, an orange soda-inspired concoction that will definitely make everyday feel like Halloween in Haddonfield.
Ingredients:
- 1 oz White Rum
-1 Part Orange Juice
- 1 Part Orange Soda
- Sour Pumpkin Candy (for garnish)
Directions:
1. Fill a rocks glass with crushed ice 3/4 of the way full.
2. Add in the White Rum, then pour in equal parts Orange Juice and Orange Soda. Stir.
3. Using a cocktail toothpick, slide three pumpkin candies onto the stick, which will then sit on top of the glass.
4. Serve.
Film Fact: From a budget of $300,000 over a 17-day shoot, "Halloween" (1978) went on to gross $47 million at the U.S. box office. In 2008, with the adjusted gross to be $150 Million, this movie is one of the most successful independent films of all time.
