Day 13: "The Camp Crystal Lake Special" Cocktail (Inspired by "Friday the 13th")
By: The Film Bartender
Camp Crystal Lake is a great spot for a summer camp. There is a huge clearing full of cabinets, woods to explore, a beautiful lake in the middle of it all - what could go wrong? However, the lovely campsite is haunted by a young camper who drowned in a lake due to the teenage chaperones having sex rather than watching over the young kids. Because of that, his mom makes every teenager who comes there pay for her son's death, forcing everyone to know the name Jason Voorhees.
"Friday the 13th" is a 1980 slasher film directed by Sean S. Cunningham, and stars Kevin Bacon, Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Robbi Morgan, Jeannine Taylor, Laurie Bartram, Harry Crosby, and Walt Gorney. The film follows a group of teenage counselors who arrive at Camp Crystal Lake a few days before the campers, hoping to soak up the sun and get drunk at night with their friends for the week. Everything goes very well, with all the counselors getting familiar with one another and hooking up at night. However, things start to go very, very wrong when a figure starts killing the chaperones one by one, which turns out to be a scorned mother named Pamela Voorhees. Her son drowned in the lake due to the chaperones not watching the kids, which is the influence of her killing all of the teens that come her way to get revenge for what happened to her son. However, Jason is definitely not dead, and his arrival out of the water serves as one of the best jump scares in a slasher film.
From the first movie, Jason takes center stage as the slasher, donning the legendary hockey mask that all horror fans know and love. He is the main antagonist in eleven "Friday the 13th" films, including a crossover film with Freddy Krueger and a reboot in 2009. We have seen him die multiple times, go to Hell and come back, go into space and become a robotic creature, face off against the legendary villain from "Nightmare on Elm Street", and so much more. After the first couple of films, this classic saga leaned more into the parody and cheesy aspect, like much of the classic slasher films have done after a while. However, all of the films in the series are enjoyable in one way or another, even if they're god-awful horror films.
Day 13's drink, which is perfect for today's movie based on the 13th, is centered around the beautiful lake in the middle of Camp Crystal Lake. It's dark and murky on the bottom, with the beautiful blue color on the top. However, there is something evil looking in the middle, full of red blood from the victims of both Jason and his mother. Check out below for the recipe for "The Camp Crystal Lake Special" to add some more spookiness to your next Halloween party!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 oz Whiskey
- 1 oz Blue Curaçao
- Club Soda (To top)
- 1/2 oz Grenadine
- Gummy Finger (for garnish)
Directions:
1. In a highball glass, pour the Whiskey into the bottom of the glass. Then, fill the glass with crushed ice to the top.
2. Add the Blue Curaçao, and then top with Club Soda.
3. Pour the Grenadine all around the top of the drink to make it look like blood. The grenadine will sink in between the Blue Curaçao and the Whiskey.
4. Garnish with a Gummy Finger, and serve.
Film Fact: Betsy Palmer said that if it were not for the fact that she was in desperate need of a new car, she would never have accepted the role of Pamela Voorhees. In fact, after she read the script, she called the movie a "piece of shit." Over the years, however, Palmer did warm up to the film, as it made her more famous than infamous, and made appearances at conventions and in documentaries to discuss it.
Now you have made your very own drink inspired by this classic slasher franchise! Whether you're making this strong beverage to rewatch this classic horror film, or you're making it for your next Halloween party, it'll be a hit among everyone who tries it!
