Day 10: "Slimer" Cocktail (Inspired by "Ghostbusters")

By: The Film Bartender

"If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!" Those are the famous lines from the classic song by Ray Parker Jr. that accompanies the classic ghost comedy film. The Ghostbusters have since become major icons for both the comedy and paranormal film genres, and the original film has spawned many sequels, a reboot, and even a TV show. However, the ghosts present in the films are as prominent and famous as the Ghostbusters themselves, with fans loving and instantly recognizing both the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and Slimer, to name a few. Our drink today, which is named and inspired by the latter, is able to capture the color of the slimy ghost and taste spookily good at the same time!

"Ghostbusters" is a 1984 comedy/horror film directed by Ivan Reitman and written by Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Rick Moranis. It stars Bill Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as the four Ghost crime fighters, as well as Moranis, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts. The movie follows three parapsychologists as they band together to form a ghost removal service after they are forced out of the university they were working at. Now together as "The Ghostbusters", they must go around town and exterminate the paranormal beings that are haunting New York.

However, they are recruited by the mayor of New York to have them take out a dead worshiper of ancient Hittite God, Gozer, who is building a shrine to the God to resurrect it. Serving as the source for all of the paranormal happenings around the town, the crew goes to find out how to take the God and its worshiper out for good.

The movie became an instant hit, and has gained a cult following and the status as a classic comedy film. It has spawned two direct sequels, "Ghostbusters II"(1989) and "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" (2021), with the latter being directed by Reitman's son, Jason Reitman. In 2016, there was a reboot of the classic film with the entire squad of ghost fighters being portrayed by women. The first sequel and the reboot were panned by critics, but the newest sequel received positive praise from film critics. It even spawned a TV show, as well as people dressing up as these classic comedy characters every Halloween.

Today's drink is inspired by the classic ghost from the original film named Slimer. He is this giant green blob of slime that went around and terrorized the patrons at a hotel in New York. He is tied with the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man as the most famous ghost in the series, and is instantly recognizable among fans of the series. Our green drink celebrates the famous ghost, and has a bit of a sour kick to it!

Ingredients:

- 1 oz Tequila

- 2 oz Sour Apple Pucker Liqueur

- 1/2 oz Simple Syrup

- 1/4 oz Lemon Juice

1/4 oz Lime Juice

- Cubed Ice

- Crushed Ice

- Lime Wheel (for garnish)

Directions:

1. Fill a rocks glass with crushed ice and a cocktail shaker with the cubed ice.

2. Add the Tequila, the Sour Apple Pucker, the Simple Syrup, the Lemon Juice, and the Lime Juice to the cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously until well combined.

3. Strain the cocktail into the prepared rocks glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.

4. Serve.

Film Fact: In the middle of the film's initial release, to keep the interest going, Ivan Reitman ran a trailer that was basically the commercial the Ghostbusters used in the movie, but the 555 number was replaced with a 1-800 number, allowing people to actually call in. Callers got a recorded message of Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd saying something to the effect of "Hi, we're out catching ghosts right now." They got 1,000 calls per hour, 24 hours a day, for several weeks.

Now you have made your very own cocktail inspired by the classic Slimer ghost from the original "Ghostbusters". This drink will be a hit at your next Halloween Party, or any party to celebrate the classic comedy film. It's also the perfect drink to sip on while re-watching all of the movies in the series, laughing along with the characters in the film!
